Just last week, we took a look at some high-energy snacks called Compete Energy Bites. These little bites exist to help you get through the day no matter what it throws at you by delivering a boost of caffeine in a small, two-bite snack. Read on to find out if they were tasty, and/or able to make me take off like a rocket.
Compete Energy Bites, which are available in Chocolate and Mocha flavors, contain 135 milligrams of caffeine, or about the same as a 12-ounce cup (Tall in Starbucks terminology) of coffee, in each cube. The boost provided by these bites is, if you are a lifelong coffee-jockey like myself, quick acting without being jarring, and sits nicely in the tummy, unlike some other caffeine-laced edibles which can be a bit harsh. It should be mentioned that if you are sensitive to caffeine the boost you receive may be a bit more intense than that described above. Like edibles of any description, you can always eat more, but you can’t un-eat it, so venture forth cautiously.
This boost of energy has proven itself more than adequate for getting through boring afternoons at work, writing a review about Compete Energy Bites at 5 in the morning, or spending way longer at the skatepark than any 47 year-old really should. Focus and energy is why us humans love caffeine, and it is why you will love these if you try them. The love, though, does come at a price and that price is taste.
The taste of Compete Energy Bites isn’t awesome. This is likely due to the fact that caffeine on its own is quite bitter. Whether Chocolate or Mocha, the flavor is vaguely chocolatey with the Mocha being decidedly sweeter than the Chocolate, but not necessarily better. A quick look at the list of ingredients will clue you into why these are more supplement than snack and it is likely intentional. If these tasted wicked good, it would be very easy to eat way too many resulting in a nasty caffeine overdose which is never good.
Please keep in mind that the above claims of enhanced energy, and focus have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. For more information about Compete and its little nuggets of energy, click here.
